What is Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB)?
Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is a common disorder of irregular uterine bleeding from the vagina that varies from a woman’s normal menstrual cycle. It reflects a disruption in the normal cyclic pattern of ovulatory hormonal stimulation to the endometrial lining. The bleeding may be excessively heavy or light and may be prolonged, frequent, or random.
About 1-2% of women with improperly managed anovulatory bleeding eventually may develop endometrial cancer.
What Are The Causes Of DUB?
Hormone imbalance is the main cause of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding. It can also occur due to following causes:
- Thickening of the uterine wall or lining
- Uterine fibroids
- Blood clotting disorders
- Uterine polyps
- Cancer
- Severe weight loss
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
- Problems with ovulation
- Hormonal birth control, such as birth control pills or intrauterine devices (IUD)
- Endometrial problems
- Excessive weight gain or loss (more than 10 pounds or 4.5 kilograms)
- Infection of the uterus or cervix
What Are The Common Symptoms Of DUB?
Vaginal Bleeding outside of normal periods is the main symptom of abnormal uterine bleeding. It can also occur within your menstrual cycle. Suspicious bleeding patterns include:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Spotting
- Bleeding between periods
- Breast tenderness
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Bloating
- Dizziness
- Bleeding that lasts more than seven days
- Bleeding that occurs less than 21 days from the last cycle
- Weakness
- Fainting
- Pain
- Passing large clots
- Increased heart rate
- Low blood pressure
- Pale skin
- Soaking a pad every hour
Complications of DUB
- Generally, DUB is occurs Once the sex hormones are regulated, abnormal bleeding usually subsides.
- Anemia is one of the main complications of heavy bleeding. If you develop anemia due to significant blood loss, your physician may treat it with minerals and vitamin supplements.
- In rare cases where the bleeding has caused significant blood loss, you may need a blood transfusion.
Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding in Ayurveda
As per Ayurveda, Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding is known as ASRIGDHARA. Sushruta refer dub as LOHITKSHARA and Charak postulates this as ASRAJA the RAKTAPITTA type disorder. According to Ayurveda, DUB is caused due to vitiation of the Pitta Dosha with Rakta Dhatu and Vata.
