Ayurvedic Treatment Of Acne Vulgaris (Pimples)

Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Acne causes spots and pimples, especially on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms. It primarily affects areas of the skin with a relatively high number of oil glands, including the face, upper part of the chest, and back.[12] The resulting appearance can lead to anxiety, reduced self-esteem and, in extreme cases, depression or thoughts of suicide.

Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages. At least 85 percent of people in the U.S. experience acne between the ages of 12 and 24 years.

Classifications Of Acne:

The following are common types of blemish associated with acne:

  • Noninflammatory acne types: Whiteheads and blackheads are types of noninflammatory acne lesion. They are the least severe forms of acne. Noninflammatory blemishes usually do not cause swelling and are not very painful.
  • Inflammatory acne: Inflammatory acne blemishes include papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Inflammatory acne is more severe than noninflammatory acne, and this type is more likely to cause complications, such as scarring or pitting. Blemishes or lesions that are inflamed, or red, swollen, and warm to the touch can result from inflammatory acne.

Symptoms of Acne:

Acne signs and symptoms vary depending on the severity of your condition:

  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
  • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
  • Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips
  • Small red, tender bumps (papules)
  • Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules)
  • Painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions)

Causes of Acne:

One or more problems can cause acne. It can occur when:

  • Dead skin cells accumulate in your pores
  • Excess oil production
  • Bacteria build up in your pores
  • Excess activity of a type of hormone (androgens)
  • Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Hormonal changes
  • Emotional stress
  • Some medications that contain androgen and lithium
  • Menstruation

Risk factors:

Risk factors for acne include:

  • Hormonal changes. Such changes are common in teenagers, women and girls, and people using certain medications, including those containing corticosteroids, androgens or lithium.
  • Family history. Genetics plays a role in acne. If both parents had acne, you’re likely to develop it, too.
  • Age. People of all ages can get acne, but it’s most common in teenagers.
Greasy or oily substances. You may develop acne where your skin comes into contact with oily lotions and creams or with grease in a work area, such as a kitchen with fry vats.
  • Friction or pressure on your skin. This can be caused by items such as telephones, cellphones, helmets, tight collars and backpacks.
Stress. Stress doesn’t cause acne, but if you have acne already, it may make it worse.

Acne Treatment in Ayurvedic:

Ayurveda has a singular approach to all forms of acne treatment as this problem appears due to imbalance of the three doshas — vata, pitta and kapha. However, the main cause is the aggravation of the pitta dosha, an Ayurvedic humor that symbolizes heat or fire. Pitta dosha manifests in the skin and causes accumulation of heating toxins. These heating toxins accumulate in deep tissues like rasa (nutrient plasma), rakta, (blood), mamsa (muscles) and lasika (lymphatic). These toxins cause contamination of deeper tissues, leading to the condition of Yauvanpidika. Because acne is deep-rooted, use of local creams, antibiotics and lotions only masks the symptoms. Thus, specific Ayurvedic acne treatment is advised which includes right diet, lifestyle and some specialized herbal combinations that tackle the disease from its root cause.

Dietary Regimen :

  • Should take light, easily digestible foods, Amlaki, Bitter items.
  • Should avoid Spicy, high in fat content, heavy food items, curd, preserved and fast food.

Lifestyle :

Should avoid day sleep, night awakening, acohol, smoking, makeup on face.
