What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder with abnormality in number of chromosomes where extra genetic material from chromosome 21 is transferred to a newly formed embryo, having 47 chromosomes in their cells instead of 46 (Normal number of Chromosomes), characterized by intellectual disability, a characteristic facial appearance, and weak muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy. All affected individuals experience cognitive delays but the intellectual disability is usually mild to moderate. All person with Down syndrome are unique individual and may be characterized to different degrees, or not at all.
Types of Down Syndrome
There are three types of Down syndrome. People often can’t tell the difference between each type without looking at the chromosomes because the physical features and behaviors are similar.
- Trisomy 21: It occurs due to extra copy of chromosome 21 in each cell of the body. 95% of people with Down syndrome have Trisomy 21.
- Translocation Down syndrome: It occurs when children have only an extra part of chromosome 21. It is attached to a different chromosome rather than being a separate chromosome 21.This type of Down syndrome affect 3% of people worldwide.
- Mosaic Down syndrome: Mosaic means mixture or combination. This occurs when a child is born with an extra chromosome in some cells but other cells have the typical two copies of chromosome 21. Children mosaic Down syndrome may have fewer symptoms than those with trisomy 21.
Causes Of Down Syndrome
During reproduction, Children got their genes passed from their parents. These genes are contain chromosomes which grouped along in the cell nucleus. There are 46 chromosomes total in each cell – Half of the chromosomes are from the father, and half are from the mother. When some or all of a person’s cells have an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21, Down syndrome occurs.
Symptoms Of Down Syndrome
Children and adults with Down syndrome usually have certain characteristic signs, including:
- Eyes shaped like almonds (may be shaped in a way that’s not typical for their ethnic group)
- Flattened face
- Small head
- Tiny white spots in the colored part of their eyes
- Short neck
- A tongue that sticks out of the mouth
- Upward slanting eye lids (palpebral fissures)
- Unusually shaped or small ears
- Poor muscle tone
- Relatively short fingers and small hands and feet
- Broad, short hands with a single crease in the palm
- Excessive flexibility
- Short height
Risk Factors Of Down Syndrome
Some parents have a greater risk of having a baby with Down syndrome. Risk factors include:
- Advancing maternal age. A woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome increases after 35 years of age.
- Being carriers of the genetic translocation for Down syndrome. Down syndrome can be transmitted to the children by therir parents.
- Having had one child with Down syndrome. If a parents have one child with Down syndrome, risk of conceive another child with Down syndrome increase.
