AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF URETHRITIS

INTRODUCTION

In 21 century, though we have all luxuries but without health we cannot live a pleasant life. Health complications are at a rapid spurt these days.

Here we are discussing “Urethritis” which is a bacterial infection and results in the inflammation of urinary tract. Symptoms associated with urethritis are frequent urge of urination and difficulty in urination (painful and burning urination).

Ayurveda is a holistic approach that assists a person to balance the body, mind and soul. According to world health organization (WHO), many people in the whole world are looking for the herbal medicines in health complications. There are various herbs like Marich (Piper longum), Gandha biroja satva (Pinus longifolia sap), Khadira sara (Acacia catechu), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis, Rala (Vateria indica extract), Karpura (Cinnamomu camphora), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Shilajit (Asphaltum), Guggul (Comniphora mukul), Sharkara (Sugar), Karpoor (Cinnamomum camphora), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Mustak (Cyprus rotundus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Chavya (Piper chaba), Kush (Desmostachya bipinnata), Darbh (Imperata cylindrica), Kaas (Saccharum spontaneum), Saar (Saccharum munja), Ikshu (Saccharum officinarum) in Ayurveda which support the good urinary health and manage the problem of urethritis.

WHAT IS URETHRITIS?

Urethritis is an inflammation of urethra. Urethra is a tube that carries urine from bladder to outside of body. Urethritis results in increased urge of urination and pain while urinating. Urethritis is mainly caused by the bacterial infections. Urethritis affects the people of all age groups. But it has been found that females are more prone to these infections as compare to men.

SYMPTOMS OF URETHRITIS

IN MEN

  • Pain and burning sensation while urinating.
  • Blood in urine or semen.
  • Discharge from penis.
  • Itching or burning sensation near the opening of penis.

IN WOMEN

  • Frequent urge of urination.
  • Difficulty during urination.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Fever and chills.
  • Vaginal discharge.

CAUSES OF URETHRITIS

Urethritis is mainly due to bacterial infections that enter into urinary tract through urethra.

PATHOGENS LIKE BACTERIA AND VIRUS THAT CAUSES URETHRITIS INCLUDE:-

  • Escherichia coli and other bacteria which are present in stool.
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes gonococcus which is a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Chlamydia trachomatis causes the Chlamydia which is also a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Herpes simplex virus may also be the cause of urethritis.

CAUSE OF URETHRITIS IN AYURVEDA

According to Ayurveda, urine elimination is the function of apan vayu. So the disturbance in apan vayu results in urinary problems. There is a similar disease named as Mootrakruchhra which has various types which has been classified in Ayurveda.

Vataj mootrakruchhra which is due to imbalance of vata dosha and results in intense pain in pelvic region and difficulty in urination.

Pittaj mootrakruchhra is due to the imbalance of pitta dosha which causes frequent, burning sensation along reddish and yellowish urine.

Kaphaj mootrakruchhra is due to the imbalance of kapha dosha which leads to the inflammation in pelvic region and causes turbidity in urine.

Sannipatik mootrakruchhra is the result of imbalance of all three doshas that is vata, pitta and kapha.

To manage the problem of urethritis, main focus in Ayurveda is the removal of blockages in the urinary tract and management of infection in the body. There are various herbs present in Ayurveda which are packed with antimicrobial activities and support the good health of urinary system.
